The team the model would have picked.
Bratislava just ended. Sweden won gold. The most surprising line in the box scores: Latvia 5, USA 2 in the quarterfinal.
The team with the biggest gap between its actual roster and an algorithmic top-N pick (USA, at 68%) was eliminated by a team with one of the smallest gaps (Latvia, at 36%) — playing without its highest-rated forward by ProdigyPoints, Olivers Murnieks (Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL).
That isn't a story we wrote. It's a result line on the IIHF schedule. This article shows you the data underneath it — country by country, side by side, no interpretation. The reader gets to decide what it means.
How we did it
- Pulled the actual roster of every team at the IIHF World U18 Championship 2026 via the Elite Prospects API.
- For each country, counted the slots by position (e.g. Sweden: 13 F / 8 D / 3 G).
- Ran a query against our database (191,000 hockey players, each with a single composite metric — ProdigyPoints — that rolls up performance, level played, visibility, physical attributes, achievements, and trending momentum) returning the top-N players by ProdigyPoints for that nationality and position, where birth year ∈ {2008, 2009} and gender = male.
- Compared the two lists. Computed % of slots that diverged.
We're calling the divergence the Selection Bias Index (SBI). Coverage was 99.6% — 248 of 249 rostered players matched cleanly to a player in our database via Elite Prospects ID. Six rostered players were born in 2010 (recent call-ups outside our cohort scope) and count as divergences.
The summary
| Country | Slots | Diverged | SBI |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🇺🇸 USA | 25 | 17 | 68.0% |

How they actually finished
| Tournament finish | Country | SBI |
|---|---|---|
| 🥇 Gold | 🇸🇪 Sweden | 33.3% |
| 🥈 Silver | 🇸🇰 Slovakia | 44.0% |
| 🥉 Bronze | 🇨🇿 Czechia | 48.0% |
| 4th | 🇱🇻 Latvia | 36.0% |
| QF — eliminated | 🇺🇸 USA | 68.0% |
| QF — eliminated | 🇨🇦 Canada | 48.0% |
| QF — eliminated | 🇫🇮 Finland | 36.0% |
| QF — eliminated | 🇩🇪 Germany | 40.0% |
| QF — eliminated | 🇳🇴 Norway | 28.0% |
| Group out | 🇩🇰 Denmark | 32.0% |
Both QF "high-SBI vs low-SBI" matchups (USA-LAT, CAN-SWE) were won by the lower-SBI team. The eventual gold medalist (Sweden) had the third-lowest SBI in the tournament. The honest counter-pattern: Slovakia (silver) had a higher SBI than Latvia and Sweden — host effect plays a role, the data doesn't deny it. Czechia (bronze) at 48% SBI also performed above what the SBI alone would predict.
We are not asserting causality. We are showing you the table.

What this analysis doesn't see
Things the model has no access to. They explain real divergences in any country's number — listed so the reader can apply their own discount:
- Playoff conflicts. The IIHF U18 runs late April into early May. CHL, USHL, BCHL, and top European junior playoffs run concurrently. Players whose teams are alive late in their league may not be released.
- Late-season injuries the model's snapshot doesn't capture.
- NCAA enrollment + eligibility. Some 2008-borns are already in college; tournament timing doesn't always allow.
- Senior-pro release. Players promoted to senior pro rosters (SHL, Liiga, Czech Extraliga) aren't always free to leave.
- Positional fit + line chemistry. A coach building a system doesn't pick from a points list.
- Late hot streaks that the model's cumulative metric averages out.
Caveats on the methodology
- ProdigyPoints is our composite, with our weighting. It mixes performance, level, visibility, physical, achievements, and trending. Other reasonable models exist; ours produces this ranking.
- This is a current-snapshot comparison (early May 2026). A pre-tournament cutoff would be more defensible for a true predictive comparison; we'll publish that version separately for the U20 WJC in Edmonton 2027.
- Goaltender ranking is the noisiest position in any data-driven model. Treat the G-slot divergences as such.
- "Diverged" doesn't mean "wrong." It means the model and the coach disagreed.
What's next
Same template for every IIHF event from here forward — U20 WJC (Edmonton 2027), Olympics, Worlds. Over enough tournaments, the legitimate noise (playoff conflicts, hot streaks, fit) averages out, and the structural patterns get sharper. By the time we publish the third or fourth one, the picture will be clear.
If you're in hockey ops and want to push back on our methodology — please. The whole point of putting numbers on what's traditionally a relationship-driven business is that now we can have the argument.
